THE BRAND
Sugi Studios is a contemporary wardrobe shaped by one moment in history: when Hawaiʻi met European tailoring. Under Kanenehiwaimaikalani Watson's direction, the label studies the classic silhouettes of the Pacific, how they arrived, how they were worn, and what Hawaiʻi made of them. We turn that research into pieces cut for today. Each collection pays homage to Hawaiʻi's history while carrying the sophistication of European dress at the turn of the twentieth century.
Our pieces draw upon not only the literal historical accuracies of Hawaii, but also an adjacent approach, a modernized lens. Our collections feature many of the lifestyle pieces needed in our primary locations of Honolulu and New York. Whether the highest form of elegance or rugged utilitarian workwear is needed for the occasion.
Craftsmanship comes first. In the nineteenth century, Honolulu was a crossroads of Pacific trade, and the Kingdom took the best of what arrived from everywhere. We source the same way: materials and makers chosen for their skill and their standards, wherever they are.
We are here to honor heritage and to push it forward, the way our ancestors did. Adapting was always part of the tradition. The intent is reverence, not reenactment.
HONOLULU — NEW YORK
Honolulu and New York, for most, would be seen as drastically different cities, yet more alike than most would admit. Both are known for their distinct hospitality, their people, and their strong sense of character and conviction. Both cities, at their peak, are places of innovators and pioneers, regardless of the field they touched. Both are rewarding to their stewards and perpetuators of culture.
Sugi Studios interpolates between the two. We design for the dualist — someone as at ease in the countryside as in the hustle & bustle of the city. Individuals who know how to slow down and how to work, and sees no contradiction between them. When Sugi Studios opens its flagship locations, they will be in Honolulu and New York.
